Adventure: Designing your space on a budget

As great as Refinery 29 makes a digital designer seem affordable, $300 is still a lot to invest when you’re short on furniture, art work, curtains…food! My boyfriend and I found this quaint little townhouse double the size of our adorable one bedroom.
We love our little place, but it’s
definitely time for a change and with that change comes a change of décor
…because why not? I love decorating, but I also love having money – you can see
how these two can conflict. Over the course of the last 8 months, I’ve learned
to design my space on a budget – so here are a few tips you may find useful.
1.
Set a budget – what can you realistically
afford? Respect your wallet, boo boo. Save that paper -- there’s no shame in not
breaking the bank. In fact, you’ll be proud that your place looks like a
million bucks on just a few dollars.
2.
Pinterest the night away—set aside time to
really think about what you want and have a clear idea in mind. As a marketing
coordinator, I always have to have a clear vision of what I want when creating a flyer, video or blog post, otherwise it's a total flop. The same goes for home décor -- having a clear
vision will ensure success while alleviating a ton of stress because you’ll
know exactly what to look for, price point included.
3.
Look at what you already own – is there anything
you can use to enhance your living space? Use that. And if you can’t use it,
sell it and use that money to replace it with something more fitting. Rummage through grandmas old things, your
parents garage – you’d be surprised of the little gems you’ll find that’ll add
character to your living space.
4.
Find a conversation piece – find an item that’ll
be entirely unique to you and allow that piece to serve as the inspiration. For
example, when trying to figure out the color scheme of our new home, I felt so
overwhelmed, I wanted to cry. Dark blue rug, grey rug, white curtains, yellow
curtains, colors, muted, ahhhh! AND THEN…I found this little gem. #PUGLife
I laughed so hard when I saw this portrait, that it deserved a place in our home. I also loved its minimalistic style
with the splash of vibrant blue. I decided I would place that exact pillow in
the center of my couch and work around it. I’ve since bought a grey area rug,
white and blue throw pillows and blue bar stools for the counter that overlooks
the living room, which brings me to my next point...
5. Shop around – you found a piece you love, or a
room you want to recreate, do your best to find it at a price that you can comfortably afford. Target, Amazon, Etsy, and Ikea
are your best friends.
Best of lucky in your new design adventure! I'll be sure to post pics of my newly decorated living room as soon as everything is all done.
